Children’s and Youth Ministry Academy for The Methodist Church of Southern Africa


Basic Course in Youth and Children’s MinistryModule 1:

Module 1

Biblical perspectives on Youth and Family Ministry

  • Biblical perspectives on Youth and Family Ministry Rethinking our ministry to youth. Practical and theoretical aspects of Youth Ministry in the local church.
  • The characteristics of children and how to minister to children
  • Family ministry
  • Adolescence and its distinctive characteristics

Module 2:
Ministering to adolescents and young adults

  • Ministering to teenagers and young adults, including caring for them
  • Youth leaders: their work and training
  • Equipping parents and other members to educate, teach and lead children to Christ
  • Integrating youth and Youth Ministry into the full life and work of the local church,


Contact week 1:

  • University of Pretoria Centre for Contextual Ministry Module 1
  • Structure (communicating within the structures, understanding the structures)
  • Methodism

Contact week 2:

  • Models of ministry
  • Leadership & Volunteerism (including conflict mamagement and difficult conversations)
  • Training (How to run and find training)
  • Counselling (Basic Counselling skills)
  • Communication


Contact week 3:

  • University of Pretoria Centre for Contextual Ministry Module 2
  • Strategic planning (Vision, Mission, Values, Budgeting)


Contact week 4:

  • Events – Running and planning camps, holiday clubs, outreach events
  • Administration
  • Finances
  • Safety



  • There will be 4 assignments relating to the prescribing reading and contact week content.



  • Excludes Transport and Accommodation for Contact weeks.
  • R12,000.00 for the course. Includes University of Pretoria fees, all prescribed books.
  • Payable up front or in two equal payments of R6,000.00 in January and R6,000.00 in June

Target Participants

  • Sunday school teachers, Sunday school superintendents, District Children’s Ministry Co- ordinators; Children’s & Youth Pastors; potential Children and Youth Pastors, Ministers who have oversight of children and youth ministry; any lay person who would like to be trained for children’s ministry; school leavers, year of your life program participants
  • Can be run in your region with 10 or more delegates


Minimum Requirements to do the course

  • People who have not matriculated, or who have matriculatyed but do not hold a degree or an advanced diploma in theology. Also volunteers involved in ministry.



  • A minimum of 1 year including an accredited certificate course through University of Pretoria Centre for Contextual Ministry, contact weeks for practical training and mentorship, assessment (assignments).
  • There will be a minimum of 1000 pages of prescribed reading.
